eCOACH Online Learning Webcasts

eCOACH Online Learning
“Student Focused. Success Driven!”

Saint Leo University is the home of eCOACH Online Learning, a live, interactive webcast series that supports student academic success, retention, and faculty development across all disciplines and teaching locations.

The eCOACH Online Learning program offers academic education, training, and supportive resources such as researching online, understanding journal articles, tools for writing papers effectively, presentations, best practices, guest speakers, tutoring, and much much more. The eCOACH program also provides attendees with valuable resources for the webinar attended, including the session’s PowerPoint presentation.

eCOACH’s mission is to offer attendees with three levels of quality academic supportive sessions: Basic, Advanced, and Faculty. Each one-hour webinar gives an engaging, live, and hands-on approach from Dr. Shannon Farris, eCOACH’s founder, host, and Assistant Psychology Professor.

To further promote eCOACH’s mission, attendees are offered an additional one to two (and more) hours of follow-up supportive services for each webcast they attend. These additional follow-up supportive services are given in the same live, engaging web conference program from a qualified professional or student tutor (Basic and Advanced webcasts), known as a tCOACH, provided by the Learning Resource Center (LRC). Each tCOACH (scroll down for tCOACH pics and information) has been trained as a qualified tutor by the LRC  program and additionally trained for the eCOACH follow-up sessions by Dr. Farris to ensure wrap-around supportive services to students, faculty and staff that are student focused and success driven!

Come online and see for yourself! ~ Dr. Shannon Farris

Before you connect to this Collaborate session, please make sure you have a headset, or at a minimum,

Dr. Shannon Farris
Founder & Host

speakers for your computer. Attach the headset to your computer before you log into collaborate. Please note that the video cameras are not necessary, but using a microphone will add flexibility to your participation. However, microphones and video cameras are not needed if you want to listen and type to participate.

First Time Participants Only:

  1. To facilitate your Collaborate experience, please visit Collaborate First Time Users  to ensure that you have the required software to run the system on your computer.
  2. If this is the first time you will be using Collaborate, you may be prompted to download some software which may take anywhere from 2 to 20 minutes depending upon your Internet connection speed.
  3. Next, test your audio set up in the “Audio Wizard”.
  4. Follow Participant Quick Reference Guides included in your confirmation email or refer to the ones attached here:

All Participants:

To attend session, please complete the following at least 30 min. prior to the webcast:

1. All webcasts are given Eastern Standard Time (EST). Click on link below at least 30 min. prior to meeting (if you’ve never used this webinar format), use your registered SLU email with Saint Leo University, and review attached documents for PC or MAC users (see above). This information will assist you in having the very best visual and audio experience that Blackboard Collaborate (formerly Elluminate Live) can offer. This step is IMPORTANT for those who have never used Blackboard Collaborate before. You’ll need to log on at least 30 min. before the webcast to adjust your computer’s audio and mic before session begins.

2. Remember:

  • You must use your Saint Leo Email Account (e.g., for students: first.last@email.saintleo.edu) for registration and correspondence.
  • You must use your SLU email (e.g., shannon.farris@saintleo.edu) when logging into Blackboard Collaborate.
  • You don’t need web cam for this webcast.
  • Webcasts are not recorded due to the individualized sessions, but are repeated several times throughout the year.
  • After session you’ll receive an online survey. Please complete the very short survey so that we may continue to provide the best service and programs possible. The survey is this program’s only measure of success. Thank you in advance.
  • Once you’ve completed the survey you’ll be automatically redirected to a website containing all resources given in that webcast. Please save these resources before closing the page. You’ll not be able to open the page again.

Is eCOACH for everyone at Saint Leo University?

Yes! eCOACH is for all current students (graduate and undergraduate), faculty, and staff.

During the registration, why must I select “Yes” to participate in eCOACH?
eCOACH is a pilot program in which the program needs data to prove a program such as this is needed; thus, consent is necessary at this time.

My professor placed the eCOACH registration information in my course in eCollege, but when I click on the registration link, I’m sent to Outlook. Please help.
Copy and paste registration link into your favorite browser (e.g., Yahoo, Google, Bing, and etc.) and the link should work. Sometimes when professors copy/paste the information containing web links, the links will deactivate. You can always check your Saint Leo University email for the latest eCOACH announcement from University Communications(usually titled, “Free Webinar”) and click on the registration link there.

Why must I register with my Saint Leo University email?
eCOACH information is only offered to students, faculty and staff who have an active email with Saint Leo University.

I registered, but I haven’t received a confirmation email.
Confirmation for registration will be in your Saint Leo email calendar. Simply go to your SLU email and click on calendar on the day of the webcast for detailed information. You’ll also receive an email alert that you’ve been invited to attend the webcast.

Registration close times (on the day of the webcast):

  • Daytime webcasts – registration closes at 7:00 a.m. ET
  • Evening webcasts – registration closes at 12:00 p.m. ET
If you haven’t received a confirmation email or calendar event at least one hour before the webinar begins, email shannon.farris@saintleo.edu right away.

Where is the link for the webcast?
The webcast link was provided at the end of your registration and will also be in your SLU email calendar.

I’m in the webcast, but I don’t hear anything. Please help.
Make sure you’ve followed the Quick Reference Guides above and or in your registration email. Then, in Collaborate, go to Tools, then Audio and run the quick Audio Wizard.

I’ve run through the webcast start-up and I’m still not able to log into the webcast.
Sometimes this happens with older computers or when there are strict blocks on downloading the necessary software applications to run Blackboard Collaborate. Java can be an issue too, especially when Java has updated recently, but Collaborate has not. Be advised, that most computers on military bases will not be able to log into this program. Try using another computer, if one is available. The browser you’re using can also be an issue. For instance, many people have trouble logging in using Google Chrome. Try using Explorer, Firefox or Safari. If issue still persists contact Blackboard Collaborate help services and DO NOT contact Saint Leo University’s staff for this issue.

I keep losing my connection during the webcast.
Make sure you’ve followed the Quick Reference Guides above and have at least 10 megabytes to run the program. When a connection is lost, it’s usually do to a wireless connection. Try using a landline (instead of wireless) connection.

I’m a professor, how do I register my entire class?
You can have each student individually register for the webcast, or sign in under your name and include the number of students attending (e.g., Shannon Farris +12 students). Please make sure to forward the PPT and survey email to all students, and encourage them to complete the brief second survey and receive all of the webcast’s resources.

When do I receive the presentation materials?
During the webcast you’ll receive a survey. Once you’ve completed the survey, you’ll be automatically directed to a Dropbox with all of the presentations materials/resources. Please save these documents, otherwise as soon as you click out of the Dropbox, you’ll no longer have access.

Sorry, I missed the webcast. Can I still receive the presentations materials?
Only attendees are able to receive the presentation materials.

2012_tCoach_Poster[1]A tCOACH offers 2+ additional hours of follow-up supportive services for each webcast participants attend. These additional follow-up supportive services are given in the same live, engaging web conference program from a qualified professional or student tutor (Basic and Advanced webcasts), provided by the Learning Resource Center (LRC). Each tCOACH has been trained as a qualified tutor by the LRC  program and additionally trained for the eCOACH follow-up sessions by Dr. Farris to ensure wrap-around supportive services to students, faculty and staff that are student focused and success driven!

Colleen Shanahan (Sexton) has been with Saint Leo University’s Learning Resource Center as a professional tutor of English/Composition since 2010. She also manages the Cultural Liaison Academic Support Program (CLASP) for international students and the Center’s social networking pages. Colleen graduated from Saint Leo University in 2010 with a degree in English Creative Writing, and she received her MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults in 2012 from The Solstice Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing Program of Pine Manor College.

What Participants are Saying:

I just wanted to thank you for a great webinar.  I was so impressed with your expertise and your ease in conducting the course (and you were so gracious to me, as well).  I look forward to the advanced Prezi course.   Gianna Russo, Instructor of English, University Campus.

I truly loved the presenter and presentation!  I thought I would walk away feeling overwhelmed because the amount of content that would be provided and because the presenter would just touch on each section not allowing for note taking…boy was I wrong!  The presenter did an amazing job of covering the content at an appropriate speed and provided just the right amount of information to keep you interested.  I also thought I would have an enormous amount of note taking to do, but I was wrong again.  All of the slides that were covered in the presentation was provided to us along with other content that was covered.  The content being supplied to us after the presentation allowed me to truly focus and listen to every word that was being said instead of trying to do some fast note taking (which is awesome because I do not know shorthand!). Staci Brooks, Junior, Psychology, Center for Online Learning.

I plan on using the new (for me) sites presented, the Harvard and University of Maryland sites, as resources. This presentation reiterated the broader scope of APA than just the citations, which I seem to get focused on with students, to the exclusion of other aspects.  eCOACH Online Learning webinars are a great resource for faculty and students, especially for the online students who can’t come to campus to take advantage of the campus services. Instructor Jane Adamson, Distance Learning MSID Program.

One of the most convenient aspects of the eCOACHOnline Learning webinars is the fact that you can view the facilitator’s desktop and mirror some of their actions in a separate window outside of the eCOACH session. It’s like having someone help you land an airplane! Terrance Ragland, graduate student the Masters of Instructional Design program, Center of Online Learning.

They are extremely helpful and especially great if you are an online student – thanks for all the useful information and backing up that knowledge with an email of the content to reinforce my experience. Jane Tyrrell, MBA Online Graduate Student.

I would recommend my students take the turnitin webinar and visit the external website. Terron Carrington, Instructor of Criminal Justice, Gainesville Center.

Allow me to give you an A+ for your wonderful contribution not only to your students, but also to this adjunct (62 yr. old) religion prof who was/is anxiously approaching teaching/learning in the online environment. I am grateful to you for sharing your knowledge, experience, and generosity.  You, Sir, are a gift to all you serve, including…Linda Taggart. You will see me again in your webinars. I have much to learn. God bless you. Linda S. Taggart, M.A., formerly a Trustee and currently a Religious Studies Adjunct Professor of Theology and Religion, Tampa Education Center.

This is a tool that is very valuable and can assist in our learning process.  I would encourage you to not take my word for it, but to try it out for yourself. Robert Mathis, Junior, Education, Saint Augustine, FL.

The webinars are a very valuable, powerful and convenient learning tool! Fernando Lopez, Graduate, MBA Program, University Campus.

I plan to use this class in my writings of my future research papers, thesis and assignments given. Specially since I would like to start a second degree, I will have a better knowledge and understanding on the different kind of papers and how citations should be inputted. It is a good resource for the APA format and questions on APA to be answered. The manual is the manual, but sometimes you need an instructor to break it down. Ruth Cruz, Senior, Criminal Justice, Key West Center.

I recommend eCOACH for anyone who needs tips or ideas for writing papers or presentations.  Learning how to use the online resources has helped me tremendously.  I feel like I can write academic papers now in a breeze, and I have confidence that I did it correct.  I highly recommend the eCOACH webinars. Denise Houston, Sophomore, Undergrad, Business, Center for Online Learning.

An absolute must for gaining a greater confidence in how to research and understand journal articles/essays. Charles Jones, Graduate Theology, Chesapeake Campus, VA.

eCOACH Online Learning was a simple, fun, interactive way for me to learn. The instructor was spot on and covered exactly the information I needed and expected. Kim Stagg, Graduate Student, Weekend /Evening MBA Program, University Campus, Saint Leo, FL.

I have already been using turnitin.com for my class, but I feel much more informed and confident now. Although I had used the faculty training resources on turnitin.com, the webinar explained the use of the site much more clearly. Instructor Lauren Adams, Fine Arts, Gwinnett Center, Atlanta, GA.

This webinar is a must for students that are traditional and nontraditional learners. Nusen Dorlouis, Senior, Savannah Center Distance Learning, Savannah, GA.

eCOACH is easy, intuitive and creates value to any program here at Saint Leo! Tommy Hess, Graduate, MBA Online.

The eCOACH Online Learning webinars are a great source for both traditional and non-traditional students alike of learning about tools to help them be successful in college. Kevin Mills, Junior, Criminal Justice-Homeland Security Major, Langley Center, Hampton, VA.

I just want to tell you that eCOACH Online Learning webinars are a great way to get specific information. Similar to doing research for papers…eCOACH should be cited! Michelle Strang, Freshman, Ft. Eustis Campus.

eCOACH provides a casual, comfortable environment of interactive learning. Christopher Meehan, Graduate, Theology, San Pedro Center.

The webinars are a great help with writing and presentations. Received a lot of information on using the APA format for referencing and citing sources in paragraphs. Seymour E. Ottey, Graduate Student, Chesapeake Center, Virginia.

I would encourage everyone to attend these webinars, are very helpful in everything that we are doing in school. Cheryl Watts, Sophomore, BS in Computer Information System, Center for Online Learning.

The online learing webinars include a wealth of information. The webinars I have attended so far have helped me tremendously in searching for information in the databases, and I now have a better understanding on how Turnitin actually works. The instructor presents the information very well, and the hour goes by very quickly. Kathy Brichacek, Sophomore, Savannah Center, Savannah, GA.

Dr. Farris is a wonderful presenter. He answers your questions and explains why the subject is beneficial to us as students. Turnitin training was very useful to me. It made me understand how it is used by instructions for grading. Lucy Swain, graduate student, Center for Online Learning.

Tell other students that if they would like to ensure that if they would like to earn the best possible grade and understanding, they should get as much training as possible with the resources that are offered. Participating in the webinars can only aid you and ensure that you have an understanding of what is out there for you. Lorraine Chamberlain, Junior, Health Care Management, Center for Online Learning.

So much about attending college involves MONEY.  This eCOACH is free.  Take advantage of it.  I’ve been away from school for a while, so I’m trying to get acclimated.  Every bit helps.  This is also assisting me in understanding what I know for sure and what I’m a not so comfortable with. Arthur Bryant, Sophomore, HR Management Major, South Atlanta Center.

Try out any eCOACH Online Learning webinar is good for writing tips and references. This is an hour of your time well spent! Frank Rivero, Senior, Fort Lee Center.

eCOACH Online Learning webinars is a fun interacting mini class that provides great information to help you succeed with confidence. Andrea Watson, North Charleston Center, Center for Online Learning.

The eCOACH Online Learning webinars are a great way to learn, interact and digest information in a collaborative environment. If your schedule is restrictive this format will give you the classroom experience without the commute. Barbara Downes, Graduate Student, Center for Online Learning.

The webinar was definitely worth my time to attend. I was given great resources and I was pleasantly surprised with the presentation, as it was interesting, creative, and the hour flew by. Not your normal webinar/seminar. Laura Wigglesworth, Senior, Center of Online Learning.

I really enjoyed the webinar training. It was a quick would recommend it. I learned the information I needed without the hassle of driving to the school. The presentation and PowerPoint were useful. I felt like I was sitting in class. Cheryl Maximo, MSW Online Graduate Program.

I really feel that the eCOACHOnline Learning webinars are very helpful because as an online student this is the exactly in class interaction that you sometimes need and it is from the comfort of your home. You can raise your hand and ask questions directly to the professor. I think it is an excellent option. Shantay Brown, Junior, Center for Online Learning.

eCOACH Online Learning webinars should be required for all new students. They are a tool for ensuring academic success. Caronda Barnes, Freshman Marketing Major at Center for Online Learning.

I just wanted to thank you again for the How to Research Online webinar. It was fantastic! I knew a lot about researching journal articles, but I was mostly self-taught, and I was hoping your webinar would fill in the blanks. It definitely did. I really appreciate it. Kim Stagg, Graduate Studies, Business.

Thank you! My husband and I are both students; he is an undergrad and I am in the ID program. We watched “How to Research Online” together last night and we both got a lot out of it. I appreciate that these webinars are being offered. Susan Christ, Enrollment Counselor for Center for Online Learning.
